Elizabeth Leach Gallery: New Perspectives on Contemporary Art
Apr 3, 2010
The Elizabeth Leach Gallery stands out from the many art galleries and museums in Portland. It serves as the beacon for contemporary art. Beautifully housed in the Pearl District, the gallery presents artists who create thoroughly modern art that goes far beyond mere paintings and sculptures.
A trip to the gallery is well-suited for both Portland residents and visitors. Conveniently located near the Portland’s Union Station, it can serve as a perfect start or ending to your out-of-town adventure, before hopping on your train home.
Well known in art circles around the world, Elizabeth Leach shows off the best in contemporary art from Portland locals to international artists. Generally, there are two shows each month. This gives you a perfect reason to come down every month to see what is on display. Founder Elizabeth Leach is an active member of the Portland art community and, according to the gallery’s website, serves on the board of the nearby Pacific Northwest College of Art.
Currently on display is Julia Mangold’s New Work (April 1- May 1, 2010). The show consists of graphite and wax sculptures in black and grays. The website describes the show as creating a "palpable tension" due to “the works’ precise placement, both in the room, and in relationship to one another.” The other show is Selected Prints by Donald Judd (April 1-May 1 2010). Known primarily as a sculptor, these prints offer an “extremely rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of this lesser-known aspect of his practice.”
Previous exhibits are as creative as they are varied. From avant-garde quilts to modern media displays, be prepared to widen your understanding and perspective of modern art. It is a refreshing break from other local art museums which are either too narrowly focused or have an unwelcoming façade.
Since moving into its current location in 2004, the Elizabeth Leach Gallery anchors much of the creative energy in the Pearl District. It is a perfect destination when you want to see art, but also want a little bit more. The Elizabeth Leach Gallery will expand your horizons in the best way possible and hopefully you will leave with a wider understanding of what art can be.
HelloPortland Tip: Make it a day of art in the Pearl District. Explore the other galleries in the neighborhood including the Bullseye Gallery and the Waterstone Gallery.
