Oaks Amusement Park: Fun Awaits in this Historic Park
Apr 3, 2010
Located in the Sellwood neighborhood, Oaks Amusement Park is a relic from a lost era. Do not expect a shiny, modern amusement park of the Six Flags or Disney Land variety. It is one of the oldest continuously run amusements parks in the United States and is thick with Portland eccentricities. It is a great place for adults and kids who are looking for a fun time, but without the hype and price.
Charming and historic, Oaks Park definitely feels one-of-a-kind. While the rides are modest and some of the facilities may need a little sprucing up, Oaks Amusement Park is a wonderful outing for a family looking for a weekend or weekday full of fun and thrills.
The park features a seasonal amusement park, a year-round skating rink, and picnic grounds. Open in 1905, it once served downtown Portland residents by trolley car. When arriving, try to imagine the generations of Portland residents who have enjoyed their trips to Oaks Amusement Park.
The Looping Thunder roller coaster is one of the main attractions at Oaks Amusement Park and is a thrilling experience. The park also features a number of other thrill rides such as The Screamin’ Eagle, Disk-O, and the Spider.
The year-round skating ring can conjure up memories of junior high school for many adults. For a fun retro evening, you can strap on a pair of skates and ride around to the sounds of your favorite records. There are also multiple kids-oriented skating events so you teach your kids how to skate.
One of the overlooked aspects of Oaks Park is the picnic grounds. Since they are situated on the banks of the Willamette River, the picnic grounds are perfect for an office party or family get-together. You can also bring your own BBQ to properly entertain your guests.
Oaks Amusement Park combines the feeling of an old-timey fun center with a carnival or county fair atmosphere. With a low price and a handful of history, you will feel it was well worth the trip.
HelloPortland Tip: You can have a birthday party at the Oaks Park skating rink. It is affordable and easy to schedule, making it a fun day for kids and adults.
