Portland Center Stage: An imaginative local theatre company
Apr 28, 2010
Portland Center Stage is a shining star among the city's vibrant arts and theatre community. With a lovely space at the Armory Theatre in the Pearl District, the theatre specializes in productions that both tantalize the mind and leave you wanting more.
Portland Center Stage prides itself on injecting life into theater. Whether you love going to the theatre or unsure whether you would enjoy yourself, this theatre will help you decide. The mission, according to their official website, is to “inspire our community by bringing stories to life in unexpected ways.” Each performance accomplishes this by wowing patrons with wonderfully acted and directed productions.
The theatre originally started as the Portland arm of Ashland’s Shakespeare Festival, located in Southern Oregon. After a few years, the Center Stage struck out on its own and by 2004 moved into the renovated Armory Theatre.
The theatre itself is amazingly beautiful and represents old-time Portland, but incorporates the best of modern styling and theatre effects.
The current productions are The Chosen (April 6-May 2) and Mike’s Incredible Indian Journey (April 20-June 13). The Chosen is an adaptation from the popular novel which is a “coming-of-age story of two boys growing up in two very different Jewish communities.” Mike’s Incredible Indian Journey is “a play about a film about a play, chronicling an artist’s wrong turn off the road to success and the strange, surreal and terrifying journey to find his way back.”
Another great option to keep in mind is that the Portland Center Stage always offers wonderful holiday performances. This year’s offerings will be The Christmas Story and Santaland Diaries. Both are fun, festive events for those who want a little more choice than another rendition of The Nutcracker.
The Portland Center Stage makes a perfect visit for both visitors and city residents. With its location near downtown, visitors will be able to find it easily and after the show be able to enjoy the restaurants and nightlife in the surrounding Pearl District.
Whether you love theatre or are just in the mood for something different, the Portland Center Stage wants to show what local theatre has to offer.
HelloPortland Tip: Did you like the performance, but have not read the book? Nearby Portland landmark Powell’s will have it and is located only a few blocks south of the Armory.
