Quintana Galleries: Innovative and informative indigenous art
Jun 10, 2010
Quintana Galleries provide a wonderful opportunity to see modern Native American art by many of the most talented artists in North America. Their masterfully curated exhibits show off beautiful and thought-provoking works. The gallery provides perspective and you can see how the beauty of art can communicate far beyond the object itself.
Unlike many commercial galleries, Quintana remains focused on a mission of providing a forum and outlet for Native American art. The gallery focuses on art not only from the Pacific Northwest, but also from the Arctic, Southwest and even South America. The gallery’s mission is to have “an active involvement in both Native communities and our own, with nonprofit organizations and with our esteemed clientele. We look forward to assisting both private and corporate clients as they establish distinctive collections of Native American Art.”
Located in the Pearl District on NW 9th Avenue, Quintana Galleries presents its art in a pleasantly designed gallery. Within walking distance of many other galleries and museums, it is a great stop if you are in the mood for exploring the variety of art on view in the neighborhood.
The gallery’s current exhibit is Shamanism: Between the Human and Spirit World (June 6-30). This exhibit focuses on Northwest carvings as well as Inuit prints. This incredibly beautiful exhibit has art which focuses on the shaman, who traditionally served as both a healer and mediator between the human and spirit worlds.
Beyond the exhibits, Quintana Galleries has a wide selection of books and jewelry which can make for perfect gifts if you are visiting Portland. Whether it is a ring or bracelet from the Pacific Northwest or book exploring contemporary Native American art, you can find a wonderful item for someone special back home.
In the crowded Portland art scene, Quintana Galleries create their own space by having a modern perspective on cultures and art whose history reaches far beyond the founding of Portland.
HelloPortland Tip: Many of the gallery’s exhibits feature artist talks. The current exhibit has an artist talk and craving exhibition by Tsimshian artist John Hudson on Saturday, June 19th at 1 pm.
