Pittock Mansion: Elegance and style in the West Portland hills

Jun 20, 2010

Any trip to Portland must include stepping foot inside the opulent and stately Pittock Mansion. While the mansion may be a personal history of one family’s experience in the Pacific Northwest, it gives visitors a perspective on how Portland has transformed itself from a logging town into the cultural center it is today.

The Pittock Mansion is nestled in the West Hills of Portland and is great visit for tourists or even long-time Portland residents. The mansion was constructed at the end of the 19th century and is “a house of historical significance and visual magnificence.” Its original tenants, Henry and Georgiana Pittock, lived in the mansion from 1914-1919 with the residence staying in the Pittock family until 1958.

The Pittock Mansion was purchased by the city of Portland in 1965 and describes itself as offering “a uniquely personal opportunity to peek into the past, and study our world as it was - from the viewpoint of one Portland family.”

The expertly manicured grounds help to frame the mansion. They encompass 46 acres and give great views of the surrouding areas, as it is over a thousand feet above downtown Portland. The grounds can make a great place for photos as well as having a picnic in their garden.

Inside, you will notice the ornately designed interior. Not only it is crafted with perfection, but the walls are filled with antiques and beautiful works of art. One step inside the Pittock Mansion and you will feel as if you were instantly transported to a castle in Bavaria or the middle of France.

If you are looking for something special, check out their website for a list of upcoming events. Especially fun are the Summer Evenings which offer extended hours and a guided tour through the historical museum.

If you are looking for a touch of elegance to cap your Portland visit, the Pittock Mansion will surely do the trick. With its masterfully constructed building, beautiful artwork, and magnificent grounds, it is truly a gem of the Rose City.

HelloPortland Tip: If you want a breath of fresh air, the mansion is part of the Pittock Acres Park, which has multiple trails through the scenic West Hills.
