Ira Keller Fountain Park: Urban renewal has never been so much fun
Jul 3, 2010
Ira Keller Fountain Park is a testament to public planning. With its flowing waterfalls and large grassy areas, the park is a perfect place for both kids and adults on a sunny day. In the summer, the park becomes a fun oasis in the middle of downtown Portland and a chance to cool off for free.
Walking into the park from the east entrance you will notice a cascading series of artificial waterfalls. The park combines stunning modern architecture with the park’s natural surroundings.
In July and August, Portland has its share of hot days. Everyone looks for a place to beat the heat and Ira Keller Fountain Park is one of the more popular destinations. You will leave in awe of the concept whether you sitting near the waterfalls or just walking around the park’s grounds. In cooler months, the park also makes a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee.
Many people tend to gather here during the lunch hour on weekdays and read a book or just lounge in the grass. While it is a well-known local park, the park never feels too packed and you can always find a place to take a seat. The park is located across the street from the Keller Auditorium which hosts the Portland Ballet, Broadway shows, and other cultural events. It is within walking distance of all the major downtown shops, museums, and attractions.
This city landmark was opened in 1970 as part of Portland’s plan to create urban green spaces. The park is named after Ira Keller, who many people credit with helping create Portland’s plan for urban renewal, saying “[his] enormous energy made urban renewal work in Portland."
While other cities may resemble concrete jungles, Portland juggles itself nicely between the serenity of nature and the bustle of business. Ira Keller Fountain Park proves that beauty, art and nature can abound in the middle of a busy metropolitan area.
HelloPortland Tip: Visiting the park, but need something to do at night? The Keller Auditorium box office across the street has day-of-ticket sales for many of its events.
