Alberta Park: Relax on the grass in this picturesque park
Jul 24, 2010
Alberta Park perfectly accents the nearby Killingsworth and Alberta neighborhoods. Like southeast Portland’s Laurelhurst Park, this park has a soothing and relaxing appeal. Its tall trees and lazy atmosphere are fit for a Sunday stroll or picnic in the park.
Located in northeast Portland, it is a good fact to remember that Alberta Park is not off Alberta Street, but rather Killingsworth. Other than that, the park is very easy to find and usually is never too busy.
A meandering path greets you at the front entrance and you can follow it throughout the park. You will notice that vintage accents like the lightposts and rock walls give off a historic feel.
Like many of Portland’s parks, people use it for all different purposes. On my weekend afternoons, you will see people playing tennis, lounging in the sun, taking walks or just reading a book.
Alberta Park is considerably large for a city park and has a large covered pavilion with basketball courts. For Portland’s many rainy days, Alberta Park can be a destination for outdoor activity.
The off-leash dog area is another great feature of Alberta Park. Urban dogs are allowed to run free without the constraints of leash. The park's scenic setting is great for playing fetch or other games with your family dog.
Alberta Park also has a scenic playground for children, which is housed right under the trees. Kids will love playing on the swing-set housed in such a lovely port. When walking through the parks, you can understand why Portland is known for its urban renewal.
The park’s long, open grassy areas beckon for summer picnics. With its easy access and parking, hosting a romantic picnic has never been so easy. Its close proximity to nearby farmer’s markets and local grocers mean that you can have a tasty picnic with food from the nearby Willamette valley.
Alberta Park is the quintessential neighborhood park. It reflects not only Portland’s commitment to providing open spaces for its residents, but sums up the tranquil beauty of the surrounding Alberta district.
HelloPortland Tip: Alberta Park is located a few blocks north of the Alberta District, which hosts a great street fair the last Thursday of each month.
