Clinton Neighborhood: Portland’s innovative up-and-coming neighborhood
May 13, 2010
The Clinton neighborhood has an unassuming look, but is clearly one of the most innovative parts of Portland. Sandwiched between Division and Powell Streets in southeast Portland, it has quietly became home to many of the city’s most up-and-coming shops and restaurants.
The Clinton neighborhood has a small and local feel to it. The neighborhood's residents have a range of ages, but on the weekends is filled with hip youngsters on bicycles and young families pushing strollers.
For breakfast, try Broder. While many people opt for a greasy spoon diner, Broder offers Scandinavian cuisine which perfectly blends healthy and great tasting food. On the weekends, the restaurant can be quite busy, but is usually more manageable for lunch or breakfast during the weekdays. Their specialities are boards, which feature an assortment of eggs, cheese, bread, fruit and fish.
The main feature of Clinton is the Clinton Street Theater. Portland is filled with many local theaters, which play a mix of old movies, independent films and second-run fare. The Clinton Street Theatre definitely has its own feel to it and plays the Rocky Horror Picture Show every Saturday night. One of their more interesting upcoming events is the Portland Underground Film Festival (June 10-13).
If you love vintage clothing, Xtabay Vintage Clothing is well known not only in the neighborhood, but has a growing regional reputation. The shop is described as having “secret of my charm and allure is my luxurious atmosphere, where people can literally spend all day relaxing in the dressing lounge area.”
If you are in a more relaxing mood, take in the neighborhood by grabbing a coffee at one of the many coffee shops in the neighborhood. Most offer outdoor seating and it is a great place to breathe in your surroundings.
Further down from the main center of Clinton is the People’s Food Co-Op. Inside is a great selection of organic produce and health items. On Wednesday’s outside the Co-Op is a farmer’s market, which remains one of only a few in Portland that operates all year round.
The Clinton neighborhood is hip in the best sense of the word. It offers cutting edge food, art and culture without any off-putting pretension. The neighborhood’s location in inner Southeast makes it perfect for Portland visitors to see why the city’s charm lies in its patchwork of Lilliputian neighborhoods.
HelloPortland Tip: If you like street fairs, check out the annual Division/Clinton Street Fair on July 24th.
