Irvington: A local neighborhood with regal charm

Jul 24, 2010

Irvington neighborhood offers visitors a stroll through tree-lined drives and majestic homes. Most were built at the turn-of-the-century, giving a peak into Portland’s transition from a small lumber town to an international city. The stately homes are surrounded by beautiful parks, bountiful shopping and great eateries.

The neighborhood is bordered by Irving Park on its north edge with Broadway demarking its southern border. Irving Park is a relaxing park with many activities for kids or adults. It makes a great stopping point after strolling through the neighborhood and even has a playground to keep children entertained.

There is plenty of eating options in the neighborhood. During hot summer days, try Mio Gelato on 15th Ave. With both outdoor seating and nearby local parks, you can take your gelato as you walk through the neighborhood. Foster & Dobb’s also has everything you need for an impromptu picnic including wine, cheese, chocolate, and bread.

Irvington’s historic homes are framed by tall, tree-lined streets. Easily one of Portland’s more beautiful neighborhoods, Irvington also has a definite air of accessibility, being located just north of Lloyd Center and right off of Interstate 5.

Irvington’s location in northeast Portland makes it a first stop if you are looking to explore other nearby neighborhoods like Alberta or Mississippi. Many of the houses have the old-time luxury that only comes with age.

The neighborhood association describes Irvington in the turbulent 1960s as being “recognized as a model of a racially integrated community." Irvington’s history shows why it is regarded today as a prime example of a beautiful and accessible neighborhood.

Irvington is also recognized as a historic district. Many of the homes have a story to tell. Each year the neighborhood hosts the Irvington Home tour. This popular event allows visitors to see inside the magnificent homes throughout the neighborhood. It happens once a year in the spring, making it a fun annual event.

Bring a camera and enjoy a breezy stroll through Portland’s majestic neighborhood. Whether you are a long-time city resident or just visiting, Irvington offers a glimpse into historic Portland.

HelloPortland Tip: The Irvington Farmer’s Market is held each Sunday from 11:00am-3:00pm on NE 16th Ave. between Broadway and Weidler.
