Clyde Common: An Innovative Dining Experience

Apr 16, 2010

Despite the name, Clyde Common is anything but mundane. You will be amazed at the innovative yet grounded cuisine. With a large and affordable wine list, delectable dessert menu, and family-style meals, it is the perfect restaurant for couples to large gatherings.

Clyde Common is located in downtown right next door to the Ace Hotel. Its busiest hours are evenings and weekends, but the wait times are never too long since there are two levels of seating and plenty of room at the bar. The large communal tables are the perfect size for business or family get-togethers. However, be prepared to sit next to strangers if you are in a party for two. Don’t worry though, communal seating always makes for a fun dining experience. If you are new to Portland, you might even meet new friends.

The restaurant’s aesthetics closely resemble that of next door’s Ace Hotel who share the same owners. It is an interesting mix of old work aesthetics and culinary delight. For vegetarians, there are plenty of non-meat choices and each is marked so you can see it on the menu. Another flexible feature of their menu is picking whether you want a large or small portion. For larger parties, try to get the most out of your meal by choosing more smaller plates. This option allows you to feel like you’ve tasted the whole menu.

The open kitchen gives you a view of the hardworking cooks. The dining experience is lively and allows you to feel the creative energy of Portland in your meal. While much of the restaurant and wait staff exude a hip, “of the moment” feel, there is little pretention and everyone is greeted with a smile.

The bar makes a smart choice if you are looking for a more informal dining experience or cannot wait for a table. With a long seating area, there is almost always a free chair or two. The bartenders are excellent at both serving traditional drinks and having an expansive wine list by the glass.

With moderate prices and definite Portland style, Clyde Common makes a bid for the best restaurant to take out-of-towners to. If you want to impress your guests and give them a taste of Portland, Clyde Common should do the trick.

HelloPortland Tip: Looking for a good lunch spot? Clyde Common opens at 11:30am and expect a more relaxed atmosphere.
