Waffle Window: The Little Restaurant That Could

Apr 20, 2010

The Waffle Window is just that. A small window located on the side on the Bread & Ink Café. Right around the corner from bustling Hawthorne Street, it is a relaxing restaurant with mouth-watering delicacies. It makes up for its small stature by serving big time tastes at a low cost.

This local secret can serve both as the start to your Saturday or as a much needed sugar rush after a long day at work.  With an expansive menu featuring both sugary and savory waffles, it will be able to fit anyone’s palette.  For those feeling a bit adventurous, try to the Bacon and Basil waffle, which blends both the sweet taste of the waffle with the meaty flavor of local bacon.

For kids, nothing will make them happier than a plate full of waffles for Saturday or Sunday morning. There are many choices to choose from, but a sweet waffle with whipped cream and strawberries will put a smile on your child’s face.

While most people assume the Waffle Window is only a breakfast stop, it can also be a dessert destination. With chocolate-dipped waffles and ice-cream sandwiches, it can fittingly cap a fun day in the sun.

Be prepared for a wait on weekend mornings, with the lines sometimes stretching 10 to 12 people deep. However, the staff quickly get orders taken, so it never takes as long as it may seem at first. A better choice, if you want to try the waffles without the wait, is to make a visit in the afternoon or early evening.

The biggest choice after ordering is whether you want to grab a seat or take it "to go." There is plenty of seating both alongside the building and in the back on the picnic tables. However, if you do get the waffles to go, grab a blanket and head to a nearby park to make it a morning or early afternoon feast.

Located in the heart of the Hawthorne District, there is also plenty of shopping around, so the Waffle Window can be the start to a fun journey in one of Portland’s most well-known and eclectic neighborhoods.

HelloPortland Tip: Want a take-home treat? Order one or two of their plain waffles. They make a delicious midnight snack.
