Meat Cheese Bread: The quintessential Portland sandwich shop
Apr 28, 2010
Unpretentious, high-quality food best describe Meat Cheese Bread. Using the top ingredients available locally, Meat Cheese Bread beat out the other Portland sandwich shops. While many of their numerous competitors rely on gimmicks, Meat Cheese Bread keeps it nice and simple.
Located near the Buckman neighborhood in Inner Southeast Portland, it is conveniently situated, albeit in a rather quiet business district. With plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, it is great on either rainy or sunny days. The outdoor seating makes a perfect lunch spot if you want to relax in the shade.
The menu nicely balances lunch and breakfast. The breakfast burrito is reinvented and makes a hearty to start to any morning. On the lighter side, you can grab coffee and toast with homemade jam, leaving you fully satisfied.
The sandwiches are mostly variants on many of the traditional types you are accustomed to. One thing to remember is that the seasonal ingredients keep the sandwiches fresh and can also tweak their toppings. For example, the BLT sandwich changes to the BLB (Bacon, Lettuce, and Beet) when tomatoes are out of season and beets are in. Not only does this help to make the sandwiches taste best, but for repeat visitors it keeps the menu options interesting.
For the health conscious, remember you can choose any of the sandwiches as a salad. A good choice if you like sandwiches, but want to do without the extra carbohydrates that come with the bread.
The restaurant is busiest during the noon lunch hour, but the waits are never too long. Weekend breakfasts are also considerably busy, so for the quickest meal head out in the late afternoon and early evening. You can enjoy your sandwich without the hustle and bustle of the lunch crowd.
A nice touch to their inside seating area is the local art. Colorful and modern, it is adds an edgy feel to the restaurant. With the interior mostly painted in white, the art also adds a nice colorful flavor to the restaurant.
HelloPortland Tip: Try their chocolates. A local chocolatier shares the backspace of the restaurant so they are sweet, local, and delicious!
