Slappy Cakes: Cooking up fun for the whole family

May 7, 2010

Slappy Cakes is the breakfast place of your dreams. When you were a kid, did you think up imaginative breakfast delights by combining the perfect ingredients including bacon, strawberries, and chocolate chips? Not only can you get the pancakes you have creatively thought up, but you actually cook them too, right at your table.

With a stylish, modern interior, Slappy Cakes perfectly balances family appeal with a modern, youthful aesthetic. Seemingly always busy, the restaurant serves a healthy mix of ages. Not strictly a family environment, it will make young families still feel hip, while adults will not feel as though they are surrounded solely by youngsters.

Located right off of Belmont Street in the Sunnyside neighborhood, Slappy Cakes resembles an updated take on the classic diner motif. In true Portland fashion, the restaurant has beautiful exposed wood beams and spacious booths that express a retro flair.

Expect a very long line on the weekends, especially Saturday and Sunday morning. If you are looking for a shorter wait, try weekday mornings, especially if you have no kids with you.

The innovative part of the dining experience is the griddle right in the middle of the table. You can order what type of pancakes you want and the toppings too. Once they bring you the toppings and batter, the fun starts. You are the cook and can make any size or pancake you can think. With creative options, you will find that no two pancakes are ever the same.

The menu is fairly expansive, so if you want to try something besides pancakes, they have a full breakfast and lunch menu. With a very affordable happy hour as well, you will be pleased at both the food and your bill.

Slappy Cakes will bring a smile to the faces of all ages. For adults, the mimosas are a great morning eye opener. For kids, parents can please the whole family by ordering as many toppings as you need. Whether it is savory pancakes with sausage and bacon or sweet pancakes with local fruit or even chocolate, a fun time awaits at Slappy Cakes.

HelloPortland Tip: The menu offers a variety of options for all diet types, including gluten-free and vegetarian.
