Huber’s: A taste of Old-Time Portland

May 12, 2010

Many modern restaurants try to dazzle patrons with flash and pizzazz. Huber’s keeps it simple with classic fare that they have been serving for over 130 years. Situated right downtown, it is a perfect lunch or early dinner spot for visitors or locals. Their food may not blow you away with culinary technique, but they will make you smile with a comforting dining experience focused on the food you have loved for years.

Huber’s is Portland’s oldest restaurant. Housed in the historic Pioneer Building downtown, it opened all the way back in 1879. To give you perspective on that, Oregon has only been a state since 1859. Huber’s has served their delightful meals for everyone from the early loggers and pioneers to today’s modern Portlanders.

When walking in, you will almost feel the history of this restaurant greet you as you take a seat. Its classic décor and helpful staff add a great touch of old-time charm.

Much of the food on the menu is classic comfort food. For lunch and dinner, their specialties revolve around turkey. According to their website, the turkey tradition started when Huber’s would offer a free turkey sandwich to any patron who bought a drink. This tradition become so popular that people now know Huber’s as the place where they get an excellent turkey dinner for a good price.

Beyond turkey, they have scrumptious appetizers like seared Ahi tuna and a fine selection of steaks. With non-meat options too, it makes a perfect dining destination if you are looking to take visitors out to a restaurant with charm and history.

For drinks, try their signature Spanish coffee, which consists of Bacardi 151 rum, Bols Triple Sec, Kahlua, coffee, whipped cream and a little nutmeg.

Beyond dinner, it is a perfect stop for sandwiches for lunch. If it is a beautiful sunny day, get your order to go. With a signature turkey sandwich, you can walk three blocks east to the Waterfront Park and enjoy your lunch on the banks of the Willamette River.

So whether you stop in for lunch or for dinner, Huber’s can be a perfect addition to your day exploring all that Portland has to offer.

HelloPortland Tip: Huber’s real charm lies in its location. A lot of what Portland has to offer in terms of arts, culture, sports, and activities is all located within walking distance.
