Little T American Baker: The 'skinny' on Portland's fresh artisan bakery
May 18, 2010
Little T American Baker is a modern marvel among the competitive bakery market in Portland. With so many local bread and pastry companies, Little T wins out with quality food, coffee, and sandwiches in an atmosphere that exudes all the qualities that make Portland great.
Located off of Division Street, a few blocks north of the Clinton District, Little T has a clean, uncluttered interior. While this may run counter to the more “rustic” feel of many other cafes, the food and staff give it the necessary “down-home charm.”
Tim Healea of Pearl Bakery and Kenny & Zuke’s opened Little T American Baker in 2008 and it specializes in artisan breads, quality sandwiches and delicious sugary treats.
Their pastry selection focuses on both classics like scones and chocolate chip cookies, while also offering up inventive delights like a rhubarb danish or baked currant donut.
For breakfast, you can choose between getting pastries and having a full meal. Either option is good, but a safe bet is a box of their pastries. These delightfully tasty treats will make anybody from kids to full-grown adults smile. A good choice is the continental which comes with their baked “short skinny” bread, butter, and locally made preserves. With ample choices, a box of Little T pastries can brighten up an office or be a nice perk at a business meeting.
For lunch, they have an assortment of sandwiches and dishes to choose from. With both meat and vegetarian options, it makes a perfect lunch stop if you are with people who have varied personal diets. Some of their current sandwiches include Spring Vegetables & Lemon Aioli on Seeded Hoagie and Seared Lamb & Minted Pea Spread on seven-grain Carrot bread. Another option is the Quiche. It is impossibly light and flaky, making it one of their more popular specialties.
For those dining in, the seating area accommodates both large and small groups. The café also has free Wi-Fi, which makes it a great meeting place if you are looking to get a little work done.
Little T gives you a fresh perspective on what a bakery can offer by combining flavors which you do not see in many other cafes. With an expansive menu and a laidback feel, it is a perfect stop for both visitors and long-time Portland residents.
