The Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League may not boast big names, but make no mistake, the NHL starts here.
Since the Portland Trail Blazers first took to the court 50 years ago, the team has been the heartbeat of Portland, otherwise known as Rip City. Thorns formed: The Volunteer-Run Roller Derby team, Portland Roller Derby, fights its way through the streets of downtown Portland. The Thorns have formed and are fighting their way to the top of the table in the American Roller Derby League.
When the Beavers moved to Salt Lake City in 1993, a Northwest League team, the Portland Rockies, moved to Portland in 2000 to play. After that, several minor league baseball teams played in Portland, including a revitalized Beaver team in 2006 and a subsidiary of the Portland Trail Blazers in 2009. Several minor league baseball teams have played in Portland since then, including a revived Beavers team from 2006 to 2009 and an Oregon State League team from 2009 to 2010. Since then, several minor league baseball teams have played in Portland, including a resurrected Beaver team from 2007 to 2011 and Oregon State League teams from 2010 to 2014.
The Portland Thorns are one of only two NWSL teams to have won a Major League Soccer affiliation. The Beavers, whose name derives from a former Portland baseball team from 1903, were founded by the Portland Trail Blazers, the latest franchise to quit after the 2010 season to become the Tucson Padres (now known as the El Paso Chihuahuas). The Portland Timbers, who have been a member of the National Women's Soccer League since its inception in 2012, are owned by Timbers Sports & Entertainment Corp., the same company that claims ownership of the Timbers Trailblazers, Portland State University and Oregon State League.
A gay inclusive team, the Portland Lumberjacks, are competing in the US Women's National Soccer League (NWSL), the second largest women's soccer league in North America. A gay and inclusive club , they compete under the same name as the men's basketball team at the University of Oregon.
The Portland area also has programs for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex ( LGBT people. Portland is home to a gay and lesbian sports club, the Portland Lumberjacks of the US Women's National Soccer League (NWSL), and the University of Oregon basketball team.
The Portland Pilots are part of the US Women's National Soccer League (NWSL) and are sponsored by Major League Soccer (MLS), the Portland Timbers. The club includes players from Portland, Portland State, Oregon State University and the University of Oregon, as well as a number of other clubs in the area. These include members of professional football and Portland football - certain clubs like the Timbers and Portland Lumberjacks.
The Eastside Tsunami is competing in the Pacific Coast Rugby League (PCRL) and the North American Rugby Union (NARU) in men's rugby. Team Portland Hunters (# 4) is part of the Portland Rugby Football Club (PFFC), a professional rugby club based in Portland, Oregon, which participates in both the US Rugby Championship (USRWC) and the World Rugby World Cup (WRC) in New Zealand and South Africa. Team Portland Raiders # 6 is a professional rugby team from Oregon State University (OSU), the University of Oregon (UO), Portland State (PSU) and Portland City College (PPCC) that participates in the United States Rugby Championships (USARCC) in North America each year.
Portland also hosts the biannual sporting fight event, which regularly features fighters from Portland, Oregon and other parts of the United States. Portland has also hosted a number of high school basketball tournaments and events, including the Oregon School Activities Association, which hosted the state basketball championships and will play next weekend at Portland State University (OSU) and Portland City College (PPCC). It also hosts the annual Portland High School Athletics Association (OHSAA) basketball tournament and is home to a variety of other high school sports programs. It also hosts the Semi-Annual Sports Fight Event, which often features up-and-coming fighters from Oregon, Washington, California, New York and elsewhere.
The women's tournament is at the Moda Center in Portland and the men's tournament at Portland State University (OSU) and Portland City College.
